Oncology and Hematology Service at Pequeno Príncipe Hospital turns 55
At the beginning of the 1960s, a medical student arrived at Pequeno Príncipe Hospital to improve his training. This professional’s encounter with children facing cancer would impact his career, the structure of Pequeno Príncipe, and the lives of thousands of patients and their families. This student was Eurípides Ferreira, one of Brazil’s most prominent names in hematology, responsible for carrying out the first bone marrow transplantation in Brazil.
This was the beginning of the Pequeno Príncipe Oncology and Hematology Service, which, in 2023, turns 55 years old, combining experience, innovation, knowledge, training of new professionals, and humanization to promote resolute care, which achieves an average cure rate of 74%. - Pequeno Príncipe has been elected one of the best hospitals in the world: Pequeno Príncipe was elected one of the four best hospitals in Brazil that offers care in pediatrics in a ranking prepared by the American magazine Newsweek. Concerning the previous classification, the institution from Paraná rose seven positions, reaching the 80th place. The category by specialty maintains Pequeno Príncipe Hospital, for the third consecutive year, as the best exclusively pediatric hospital in Latin America.
- Research Institute will have a research project financed by Finep: A study from the Pelé Pequeno Príncipe Research Institute was selected in a notice from the Financier of Studies and Projects (Finep, in Portuguese). It will receive resources to investigate a very aggressive type of childhood cancer: neuroblastoma. This was the first project of the unit approved by Finep, which has the goal of promote the economic and social development of Brazil through public support for science, technology, and innovation.
- Representatives from Pequeno Príncipe Hospital participate in discussions that strengthen the third sector: As a philanthropic institution, Pequeno Príncipe has an essential role in philanthropy. To discuss topics that strengthen this ecosystem, the institution participated in two critical events in recent days. This action in networks and mobilization of collectives strengthens the Hospital’s institutional positioning beyond the provision of health services.
